discontented loaf

There once was a loaf called meat, dressed up in a cloak of ketchup. It was baked to perfection, then stuck in the fridge to cool. Its fat congealed and stuck to my mouth, so in the microwave it went. It was not much better. The end.

"Gone"

The word "gone" may be used to reference many things in many ways. Examples like "he is gone" or "my anger is gone" or "the snow is gone" are just a sampling. In this instance, tonight, it is in reference to my dinner. I know I am supposed to photograph it before I consume it, but tonight I just could not resist! I did not want to eat it cold, even just a fraction cold. That pork chop was speaking loudly to my belly "EAT ME NOW!" So I did. I could have CHEATED afterwords and put new food on my plate to photograph, saying that was my dinner. But that would have been a lie. My food was already in my belly. Such a happy belly it is now!

Bleak Winter

What thoughts carry me through the winter?
The cold is not permanent.
The grass will turn green again.
Memories of the smell of spring flowers.
Winter hair starting to be shed in February.
Calculating due dates!

little red stuff

Yuck. I do not like you. Although you are quick and easy, my two favorite things, I do not like you. When dinner is due but time is short, you visit the table in your taste-dull non-glory. Go back to the box you exited, you vile excuse for nourishment. I banish you! Real food is more than a box and a jar. Real food takes longer than nine quick minutes. At least you are not mac and cheese. For that I am thankful!

My favorite cat.

everything

As a sort of celebration of the official first day of classes this semester, I brought home subs for dinner. My studio problems class shall prove to be the most interesting of the three I am taking this time. Bring on the work!

just a little longer...

really? i can make it myself?

It still amazes me when I find that I can make something at home, from scratch, that we either purchase at the store or find at a restaurant. Usually tastes better at home too! Hooray for teriyaki sauce!

easy dinner

feels like cheating to just throw some bought sauce with some bought elbows, even if i did throw in some of our fresh sausage. at least i drank a glass of milk. i think it was milk. didn't taste like milk though. tasted like cold... something. i yearn for a cow in milk!

Head stuck in a bees' nest

would be better than the headache I have been fighting today. It amazes me how quickly seeds can sprout. Wonder if they were treated with accelerant before going in the package?

when the sun comes out in winter

there is a time during winter where I can no longer stand it. cooped up too long with grouchy children. serious lack of natural vitamin d. summer tan just a faded memory. then the sun will blaze through the clouds and I will dream through seed catalogs. I will remember there is an end to this misery called winter. some sprouts should help...

after-dinner mints

If you have breakfast for dinner, are they still after-dinner mints? Sure wish I had some!

Saturday, January 8, 2011

boiling oil

Rendering lard takes a while. A long while. It looks gross. It does not smell good either. Never used lard to make a pie crust, but it is supposed to be the best. Hopefully all this work is worth it! Smoked pork chops taste like ham.

the french know how to make cooking interesting!

"Pour in the cognac and lite it on fire." Easy enough, but how high are the flames supposed to reach? Guess they reach all the way to the ceiling. Can't wait to try it again!

another dinner, another day gone by

dinner means a full stomach,
most of the time.
also bedtime following for the children.
it means even though the sun may have set,
the fun has just begun.
my favorite time of the day.

the cat with un-numbered days

It is said cats have nine lives. Smokey has somehow managed to continually escape the chopping block. Bad kitty for peeing on my kitchen floor! You are so cute and cuddly, though!

tears

onions do not make me cry,
unless they are strong cooking onions,
then they make me cry.
perfectly fried onions and peppers
make me cry too.
so do sad stories,
and certain websites,
and commercials.

remove pj's to cook

there is an oft overlooked rule- "one must not cook shrimp while in pajamas"
on came the jeans and t-shirt for my foray into the kitchen to whip up shrimp scampi and broccoli alfredo
the engagement photos are edited, although some will continue to be tweaked for sure
time for some coffee and pajamas :-)

It's a start

Sometimes I am just too busy to bother cooking. Take tonight for instance. I had photos to edit for Mandie and Andy. Sure, they could wait till tomorrow, but I can't wait! The kids ate leftover sub from lunch, and Casey whipped up some chicken to compliment our leftovers from last night. Served with sparkling pink grape juice, it was perfect.
